Overview

Pakke Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as Pakke Tiger Reserve, is one of the most pristine and rich biodiversity hotspots of Arunachal Pradesh, located in the East Kameng district. Spread over about 862 sq. km, it lies along the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas and is part of the larger Eastern Himalayan biodiversity region.

The sanctuary is blessed with dense evergreen forests, hills, and river valleys, making it a paradise for nature lovers.The Pakke River and several streams flow through the sanctuary, adding to its charm.

Wildlife

  • Known for its rich birdlife, especially hornbills – it is home to four species: Great Hornbill, Wreathed Hornbill, Oriental Pied Hornbill, and Rufous-necked Hornbill.
  • Large mammals include tigers, leopards, clouded leopards, elephants, barking deer, and gaur.
  • Reptiles like pythons, king cobras, and monitor lizards also thrive here.

Flora

  • The sanctuary has subtropical and tropical evergreen forests with rich vegetation.
  • It is also dotted with orchids and medicinal plants, making it a botanical treasure.

Tourist Experience

  • Bird Watching & Wildlife Safaris – Bird enthusiasts flock here to see rare hornbills and other Himalayan birds.

Conservation Importance

  • Pakke is one of the most important sites for Hornbill conservation in India. Local communities, especially the Nyishi tribe, play an active role in protecting the forest and wildlife through eco-conservation initiatives.

Accessibility

  • Nearest town: Seijosa, which serves as the entry point.
  • Nearest airport: Tezpur (Assam), about 50–60 km away. From there, road transport leads to the sanctuary.

Best Time to Visit

  • November to April – clear skies, pleasant weather, and excellent wildlife sighting opportunities.
  • The monsoon season (June–September) should be avoided due to heavy rains and difficult road access.
