Dibru‑Saikhowa National Park in Assam, India—a remarkable riverine and swamp ecosystem located in Tinsukia and Dibrugarh districts of Assam and on the southern floodplains of the Brahmaputra, Lohit, and Dibru rivers.

The Park Covers approximately 340 km² as a National Park plus a buffer and biosphere reserve area totalling 765 km².

Dibru- Saikhowa was declared a Biosphere Reserve in 1997 and upgraded to a National Park in 1999.

 

Fauna

DibruSaikhowa is One of the few places in India with feral horses, descendants of British Army mounts released during World War II. Around 50+ individuals, often visible grazing on marshlands inside the park.

Several critically endangered mammal species like: Bengal tigers, Indian leopard, clouded leopard, sloth bear, Hoolock gibbon, capped langur, slow loris, wild water buffalo, Gangetic river dolphin, elephants, and hog deer are also found in DibruSaikhowa National Park.

DibruSaikhowa is an  international Important Bird Area (IBA) with over 350–500 speciesof birdsincluding many endangered species like white‑winged wood duck, black‑breasted parrotbill, Jerdon’s babbler, Greater Adjutant Stork, Spot‑billed Pelican, Bengal Floricanand recent sighting of migratory duck species like Mandarin Duck , make DibruSaikhowa a birders  and wildlife photographers dream destination.

  • Park also Supports diverse riverine fauna: Gangetic dolphins, crocodiles, monitor lizards, and fish diversity including migratory and indigenous species.

 

Things to Do

  • Boat safari on the rivers and wetlands, especially at MaguriMotapungBeel, to spot birds and river dolphins

 

  • Trekking and nature walks through the forest, often to local villages (e.g. Laika &Dhadia) where visitors can learn about local Mising community life.
